The Circle – Mix by Orla Wren/Flau (Edition 19) 7 October 09

orlawrenBrought to you by Arctic Circle Radio, the Circle is a new weekly podcast that takes you on a one-hour journey based on the most simple and significant of shapes. Every Circle is unique; formed from a guest curator’s musical landscape and they all share the same revolutionary quality: each one ends at the point where it began.

Edition 20 – Mix by Orla Wren/Flau: The idea behind the mix was to say a big thank you to Yasuhiko, who records as aus and runs the wonderful Japanese FLAU label. Thank you for the support, enthusiasm and professionalism in releasing and promoting my recent album The One Two Bird And The Half Horse. The tracks used in the mix are a selection from the current FLAU catalogue plus an exclusive Orla Wren track from a forthcoming EP. Mixed in a field surrounded by sixty foot trees, one day in August on Dartmoor in Devon.

This mix brings together tracks from our project 14 Versions of the Same EP.
It represents perhaps the more ’subtle’ sounds from a project bringing
together experimental artists from the UK, US and Australia. Each artist
has taken 4 core audio parts, and done whatever they like them to create 4
new tracks. They are then released as an EP ‘Version’, and will be brought
together for a box set in 2010.

The Notwist & the Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra

notwistThe Notwist + The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra
with The Sleeping Years

After many a celebrated concert in Hamburg, Amsterdam, Munich and Cologne, The Notwist and The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra will be playing at the Union Chapel in London on the 12th December.

The combination of a 20-piece orchestra with a 5-piece band from Bavaria, holds a lot more promise than the typical “Rock meets Classical” set up. Instead, old and new Notwist songs are elaborated upon to form extremely complex and intelligent orchestral arrangements that are sometimes moody and often happily insane but live up to high expectations.

The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra make music in their very own galaxy – a similar one to which Raymond Scott, Sun Ra or Bach and Beethoven must have once passed by.

These evenings celebrate a new interpretation and elaboration of the Notwistian songbook, which due to logistical reasons can only take place on a few very special occasions.

Last year, The Notwist released their album “The Devil, You and Me” on City Slang, for which the The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Glatzel, contributed important orchestral arrangements. The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra released their first album “Take Off” in May, on Notwist’s own label, Alien Transistor. Over the last two years the Munich based documentary filmmaker, Jörg Adolph, filmed the coming together of these two ensembles on stage and off.
