THE STORY:

On different islands, caught between the sea, set adrift and searching,
We lie awake, on different lands, beneath strange stars,
Tangled up in the sea, drawn in the light of two moons.
When the land is remade and the stars sing to distant shores, what is it to be lost?
And when will we be found? In familiar city streets, we wander sick and lonely,
Yearn with heavy hearts for places unknown.
Trembling under fragile moonlight, desperate for adventure.

The Notwist & the Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra

notwistThe Notwist + The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra
with The Sleeping Years

After many a celebrated concert in Hamburg, Amsterdam, Munich and Cologne, The Notwist and The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra will be playing at the Union Chapel in London on the 12th December.

The combination of a 20-piece orchestra with a 5-piece band from Bavaria, holds a lot more promise than the typical “Rock meets Classical” set up. Instead, old and new Notwist songs are elaborated upon to form extremely complex and intelligent orchestral arrangements that are sometimes moody and often happily insane but live up to high expectations.

The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra make music in their very own galaxy – a similar one to which Raymond Scott, Sun Ra or Bach and Beethoven must have once passed by.

These evenings celebrate a new interpretation and elaboration of the Notwistian songbook, which due to logistical reasons can only take place on a few very special occasions.

Last year, The Notwist released their album “The Devil, You and Me” on City Slang, for which the The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Glatzel, contributed important orchestral arrangements. The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra released their first album “Take Off” in May, on Notwist’s own label, Alien Transistor. Over the last two years the Munich based documentary filmmaker, Jörg Adolph, filmed the coming together of these two ensembles on stage and off.

Vashti Bunyan with David Kitt

vashtiVashti Bunyan with David Kitt  / Sunday 11 April @ Union Chapel

Now based in Edinburgh, Vashti’s story tells of the thwarted promise of early fame, disenchantment, long-term exile and eventual rediscovery. In the mid-‘60s, after quitting art school to concentrate on music, she was discovered by The Rolling Stones’ guru, Andrew Loog Oldham, signed to Decca and recorded a single written by Jagger / Richards. Reviews touted her as ‘the new Marianne Faithful’ or the ‘female Bob Dylan’ (though Vashti claimed to be neither), yet further singles remained unreleased, leading to a sense of despair and a rejection of the music industry. Fast forward to recent times and a host of young, new admirers emerged citing her influence, and Vashti has since recorded with Piano Magic, The Cocteau Twins’ Simon Raymonde, Devendra Banhart, and with Animal Collective on the ‘Prospect Hummer’ EP that FatCat instigated in 2003 and released in May 2005. Following our contact with Vashti, we began chatting and offering advice on some new songs she was writing and looking for a home for. After a while, it occurred to us that instead of advising her on other labels, maybe FatCat could be that home. Vashti happily agreed and the result was her album, the truly beautiful ‘Lookaftering’ released in October 2005

David Kitt (born in Dublin, Ireland) grew up surrounded by music, as his father and uncles formed a successful touring folk group when he was young. He began performing live sets while studying at Trinity College, Dublin, where he completed a postgraduate course in music technology. He then recorded and mixed the eight tracks of his debut release in his bedroom. This debut LP ‘Small Moments’ was followed by ‘The Big Romance’, his biggest selling record, ‘Square One’ and ‘The Black & Red Notebook’, a cover LP. His most recent album is The Nightsaver which will be released in the UK in 2010.
