Like your quintessential Brit it’s inevitable that the Circle mix I’ve put together is based around the weather, or more specifically the seasons. Although recorded on one of those all too rare clammy summer evenings, I chose to start with Max Richter’s yearning ode to autumn, unquestionably my favourite season. Next we pass through a brand new Lost Idol track which reflects on the summer gone & looks towards the long, icy nights ahead, leading into the reassuring ambience of Fennesz like a fizzing warm glow on a bitter winter’s night. To Rococo Rot herald the gentle movement of spring with shuffling drums as life begins to stir in the hedgerows, while Brightonian instrumentalist Yawning Gulf conjures long, hazy afternoons spent squinting at the sun. The latter part of the mix draws us back full circle; with the endless possibilities of summer gone the leaves must fall, the darkness draws in & once again Max Richter reminds us of the sweet melancholy of autumn.
Black To Comm – Jonathan (Type)
Max Richter – Autumn Song 2 (Fat Cat)
Lost Idol – In Time & Space (Cookshop)

Roll The Dice – Guadeloupe (Digitalis Industries)
To Rococo Rot – Seele (Domino)
Jaga Jazzist – Toccata (Ninja Tune)

THE STORY:
On different islands, caught between the sea, set adrift and searching,
We lie awake, on different lands, beneath strange stars,
Tangled up in the sea, drawn in the light of two moons.
When the land is remade and the stars sing to distant shores, what is it to be lost?
And when will we be found? In familiar city streets, we wander sick and lonely,
Yearn with heavy hearts for places unknown.
Trembling under fragile moonlight, desperate for adventure.
Damian O’Hara (Pika Pika), Miho Ashima, Dan Carney, Dale Grundle, Stuart Bowditch, Ray Hogan vs Caitlin Hogan, Gemma Tortella-Procter, Ewan Brown & Lenny George.

The Explorers Club is a collaboration between LOAF recordings and Arctic Circle
Together we plan to bring you The Explorer’s Club, a series of special, one-off singles released once a month from 30, or so artists from the four corners of the globe. Iceland, Germany, Japan, Scotland, America, Ireland, France and Australia are just some of the places that these maverick composers and performers hail from.
We were delighted to have such great and established contributors to this project as The Mercury nominated Sweet Billy Pilgrim, the multi talented instrumentalist Peter Broderick, one of Scotland’s best kept secret Bill Wells (as The National Jazz Trio of Scotland), the ever-so-lovely Kama Aina and a piano driven track by Johann Johannsson.
We were privileged to work with such a diverse range of acts, represented by some of the most interesting labels around; Bella Union, Type, Static Caravan, Front & Follow, 4AD, SamadhiSound, Willkommen Records as well as our own blend of ‘Domestic Pop’ thrown in to the mix with contribution by LOAF’s own Montreal-based Oen Sujet and our handsome ‘hommie’ Vincent Oliver.
All of the artists involved create music inspired by the unknown. Our intrepid adventurers travel without maps into the hinterland to bring you back audio treasures capable of transporting your mind to another plane.
But Explorer’s Club isn’t only offering a selection of our favourite established acts. We’ve also been forging into the unknown to bring you some hand-picked, uncharted beauties such as Snowbird (new project of Simon Raymonde and Stephanie Dosen), Mint Julep and Soren Bigum, for whome Explorer’s club will be their debut release. Others are entering into new worlds of collaboration; Andy Nice & Isnaj Dui, Minotaur Shock & J Underwood, Ted Barnes & Emily Barker, Plus Plus & Hybernation and the stunning collective effort of Hauscka & Stephan Schneider.
So why not join us and explore a universe of music from the comfort of your own listening space.
Welcome to the Explorers Club I podcast. Contained within is an exclusive interview with Tim Elsenburg (from Sweet Billy Pilgrim), Peter Broderick and Ryan Teague will tell us more about their contributions to this year long musical adventure
Welcome to the Explorers Club II podcast. Contained within is an exclusive interview with david Edwards (from Minotaur Shock), Simon Raymonde (from Bella Union) and Keiron Phelan (from Smile Down Upon Us) will tell us more about their contributions to this year long musical adventure.

Hybernation – Circle Mix 2 (E2 & E8). To celebrate the new Hybernation release on Cotton Goods, Stuart Bowditch has recorded a new Radio mix for Arctic Circle radio. The premise of the Circle Mix is to end up where you began, so he takes you on a journey around the E2 & E8 postcodes of East London, visiting all the locations where he made the field recordings which inspired the tracks on the new album.
In walking the route (70 minutes) you also pass the houses of several other musicians that live in the neighbourhood, so some of their work has also been incorporated into the mix.
Many thanks to all involved: Craig at Cotton Goods, ambient.space, Home Normal, Second Language, FBox Records, Paul at the Flea Pit, Katie, Mark, Antony, Ollie and Ben at Arctic Circle.
